Maybe this time I should buy a pair of Lederhosen?
Yeah, on my way to Austria again; leaving tomorrow afternoon. Long story that ends with a short notice business trip for ten days. This is my third working visit there, including a trip with Anita for two weeks in England and Austria (with me working five days of it).

Like most business trips this will be less fun than it sounds like. You don't want to waste your time on-site when your company (or even your customer -- as in this case) is paying for it, so there's little time for sight-seeing. Of course there is good beer and pretty damn fine food and the girls are pretty. But you can say the same thing about Seattle. Plus we have better coffee, even if Vienna is the place where the ghod's brew first became a part of western culture.

Still I have come to like Austria and its people. If I was more inclined to work on my sucky German I suppose I would enjoy it even more. Maybe I'm not quite ready to invest in a pair of leather shorts and learn to yodel, but I do want to see more of the country someday. And I would be looking forward to this trip if there had been more time to prepare.

If only I didn't have to spend so much time trapped in an aluminum can full of people in order to get there and back...

The bloggers will miss you. The group is morphing a bit, but continues to be lively and interesting. I, however, need a vacation!

I actually sort of feel bad that I am missing that meetup. The subject was interesting and I have blown off so many social engagements in the last six months. It was to be part of my 'social rehabilitation' or some such.

Oh well.

beer, beer, beer
Here is an old link with old articles about Austrian Beer (some fun stuff and a picture of a (pet?) opossum on a table indoors). How much could the basics have changed?

Get some locals to take you out to a few places at least. You have to eat sometime.

Have fun whenever you can.

The beer really is good there, although a bit heavy on the lagers and pilsners. I guess some of the old tradition of local breweries survives throughout Austria, but there are still three or four big beer makers who dominate the market there. Gosser for example.

Interestingly, many Austrians make homemade schnapps in various interesting flavors as a hobby. I have some pine flavored schnapps given to me as a gift.

Does it taste like retsina? I have never had a schnapps that I could stand, although perhaps all came from WSDLS, and there like only one 3rd rate kind.

I was under the impression that there were lots of tiny breweries along the way, that do their own brews. True, most of it is a light wheat beer, but light beer does not have to taste watery.

Have a good time.

What I actually need right now are some leather chaps. But not to wear to the bars on Capitol Hill! (Yeah, I knew you were thinking that. Hmm... I wonder if I can find a cheap pair on Craigslist for that area. No! Wait! I'd rather pay more for ones a little less 'used'.)

I recently picked up another motorcycle and this one isn't full dress. So I need something to keep the legs dry...

I am on the flight to Amsterdam right now, waiting for loading to finish. So I will be in Vienna by mid-afternoon. Then drive for two/three hours. I fly back a week from Wed.

ETA: I am actually in Amsterdam right now waiting for my connecting flight to Vienna. But I wanted to do some editing because Dave commented twice (once without logging in) and I responded originally to the first one...
