Obamawatch for July 10, 2008
Some people are wondering what happened to the Obama they supported during the primaries? Meanwhile John Scalzi demonstrates why he gets all the link love with a little rant about who gets to call who an elitist.

As always, I'm the guy who hates the leading politicians on both sides. That means I get to say "I told you so." when people complain about Obama acting like a politician. I should point out that this doesn't mean you shouldn't vote for him in the general elections. It just means you have to be a realist. He obviously is and, quite honestly, that raises his credit with me...

I'm disappointed. Realistically, he could have voted either way on the FISA bill. He would get the same flak either way. Why not make a principled stand? Maybe he could attract a few principled civil libertarian conservatives.

Too few of us to count, I'm afraid. Plenty of people who think highly of their civil liberties, but few principled enough to refuse to 'trade them for temporary safety'.

I admit I'm disappointed about the FISA thing, but otherwise, I'm actually happy we've got a good politician for a candidate, because that means he's got a good shot at cleaning up our international reputation.

That's pretty much my feeling as well, although I also remain hopeful that domestically he will drive a wedge between the wingnuts and the conservatives in the Republican party. Whether the Democrats ever amount to anything, just causing a realignment in the Republicans might help us all out. One of the things I love about Obama is his following (and expanding) Dean's 50-state strategy.
