Clusterfuck Nation

Via [info]jwz I found Clusterfuck Nation by Jim Kunstler today. And, wow: If I ever thought I was the curmudgeonliest guy on the net, I know different now! I mean this guy isn't just angered by corporations, government, media, politics, politically correct speech, most economists, ecology nuts, technology nuts, religionists, leftist moonbats, rightist idiots, urban sprawl, bankers, apathetic American people, modernists, traditionalists and the New Urbanists -- he is even ticked off by the guys at Google.

I'm in awe... I can't possibly compete on this level. This guy is a pro!

For example I certainly agree with him that the biggest problem we are looking at in the next twenty years is energy supplies. That things will only get worse as China and India modernize to the level of America in the mid-twentieth century and therefore increase their oil consumption to record levels. That so-called 'green' and 'renewable' energy sources will never be able to fill the gap. And that our fiscal policy seems bent on destroying America before we even have to go to war with China over the Earth's dwindling oil reserves. I've been saying things like that for a while now.

But no matter how I try I just can't manage to be as pessimistic about things as Kunstler. I mean, even in the dystopian future history I worked out for my SF stories I never imagined things so dismal and desperate. Man! Now I'm gonna have to work things into my scenario like people tearing up suburban housing developments in order to grow food closer to the cities because transportation costs are so high.

Oh well, at least he hasn't thought of a fusion of the Green Party and the Religious Right becoming a powerful political force. I can claim that one for my own!
